Asbestos Inspector

CORE Environmental Consultants, Inc. is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Asbestos Inspector to support environmental consulting projects throughout the New York City metropolitan area, with a primary focus on projects within the NYC subway system.

The successful candidate will perform asbestos-containing material (ACM) inspections, collect bulk asbestos samples, perform wastewater sampling associated with asbestos abatement activities, document field conditions, and prepare accurate field records. Work will be performed in active transportation, commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities throughout New York City.

Projects may require work during evenings or overnight track outages depending on client schedules. Flexibility to accommodate varying work hours is preferred.

Essential Functions

• Perform inspections of suspect asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and project specifications.
• Collect representative bulk samples of suspect ACM using approved NYSDOL inspection procedures.
• Perform wastewater sampling associated with asbestos abatement activities and other regulated work within the NYC subway system.
• Accurately document sample locations, field observations, photographs, and chain-of-custody information.
• Prepare detailed field notes, inspection logs, sketches, and sample documentation.
• Coordinate with project managers, contractors, laboratory personnel, and MTA representatives regarding inspection activities.
• Identify suspect asbestos-containing building materials that may be impacted by planned construction or maintenance activities.
• Verify field conditions and report any unsafe conditions or regulatory concerns to project management.
• Ensure sampling equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and used in accordance with established procedures.
• Maintain compliance with NYSDOL Industrial Code Rule 56, applicable OSHA regulations, MTA requirements, and company standard operating procedures.
• Prepare clear, accurate, and timely inspection documentation for incorporation into final reports.
• Travel regularly throughout the five boroughs to support multiple project sites.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

• Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators and protective clothing, when required.
• Follow all applicable asbestos safety procedures and site-specific health and safety plans.
• Maintain compliance with OSHA, NYSDOL, MTA, and client safety requirements.
• Participate in required safety meetings, briefings, and training.
• Report unsafe conditions immediately and promote safe work practices at all project sites.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in environmental science, industrial hygiene, engineering, construction management, or a related field is a plus.
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience performing asbestos inspections is strongly preferred.
• Experience performing asbestos inspections on MTA or other transit-related projects is highly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong knowledge of asbestos-containing building materials and inspection methodologies.
• Familiarity with NYSDOL Industrial Code Rule 56 and applicable OSHA asbestos regulations.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently in active construction and transit environments.
• Experience preparing accurate field documentation, chain-of-custody forms, and inspection records.
• Ability to climb ladders, access confined spaces, walk long distances through subway facilities, and lift field equipment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic field documentation preferred.

Required Qualifications

• Current New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) Asbestos Inspector Certification.
• Current MTA/New York City Transit Track Safety Certification (or ability to obtain prior to assignment).
• Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.
• Ability to work safely in active subway environments.
• Willingness to travel throughout the five boroughs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Three or more years of asbestos inspection experience.
• Previous experience supporting MTA, NYC Transit, or other public transportation projects.
• Experience performing wastewater sampling associated with asbestos abatement activities.
• Additional environmental certifications or hazardous materials experience.
• Experience working in occupied, industrial, or transportation facilities.

Working Hours

This position supports a variety of environmental projects throughout New York City.

Typical work is performed during standard business hours; however, evening or overnight work may occasionally be required to accommodate client schedules, subway service outages, construction activities, or other project-specific requirements. Weekend work, holidays, or extended hours may also be necessary depending on project demands.

Flexibility in scheduling is preferred.
